New Delhi, 20 November (IANS). A Delhi court on Friday extended the judicial custody of JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam accused in the Delhi violence case till 23 November.
Both the accused arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were produced before Additional Judicial Judge Amitabh Rawat through video conferencing at the end of their judicial remand.
The case against the two was related to a conspiracy to incite violence, in which 53 people were killed and 748 were injured. In the case filed against Khalid, the police have claimed that the communal violence was a pre-purported conspiracy allegedly hatched by Khalid and others.
The Delhi Police had on 6 November approved the Delhi Police to prosecute Khalid. The Delhi Police can now nominate him in his supplementary charge sheet if he gets prosecution sanction against Khalid from the Delhi government as well as the Home Ministry.
Under Section 13 of UAPA, Delhi Police needed clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Government of Delhi under Sections 16, 17 and 18 to prosecute the accused.
Delhi Police has filed a 17,500-page charge sheet against 15 people for spreading violence. Charge sheet has been filed under UAPA, Arms Act and Indian Penal Code.
