Lucknow, 22 November (IANS). Uttar Pradesh Home Department has asked Kanpur’s Additional Director General of Police to take action against 37 policemen in connection with alleged killing of gangster Vikas Dubey or disregard of duty.
The three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Bhusreddy, Additional Director General of Police Hariram Sharma and DIG Ravindra Gaur had investigated the role of police in the murder of 8 police personnel in Bikaru. Dubey attacked the police team when she went to Bikaru village to arrest him. Dubey and 5 of his colleagues were later killed in separate encounters by the Special Task Force.
The SIT report said that 37 policemen who were in or posted in Kanpur leaked information about his arrest to Dubey. Of these 37, 8 will face strict action.
Among the 8 policemen, Chubepur station officer Vinay Tiwari and sub-inspector K.K. Sharma was suspended after the incident and later arrested. They are among the 38 people named for the ambush.
ADG Jai Narayan Singh of Kanpur has been asked to take action against 6 other policemen, for whom a lighter punishment has been recommended. The remaining 23 policemen will face preliminary departmental investigations. These include police officers from Kanpur Nagar district as well as neighboring Kanpur Dehat district.
The SIT analyzed a year’s record of Dubey’s mobile phone and found that some policemen were in regular contact with him.
Earlier on Friday, an FIR was registered against Vikas Dubey’s wife, father, brother and other family members for allegedly purchasing arms licenses and SIM cards using fake documents.
