New Delhi, 22 November (IANS). Delhiites woke up from sleep during the morning for the first time in the last 17 years amid the lowest temperature. Lodhi Road recorded a minimum temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius. Meteorological Department (IMD) officials gave this information to IANS.
This is closest to the record of 29 November 2003 when the mercury reached 6.1 ° C.
However, the temperature in Safdarjung was recorded to be 6.8 degrees. Officials said temperatures at isolated places like Lodhi Road were below the average recorded by IMD. IMD officials said that meanwhile, the maximum temperature is expected to be 24 degrees on Sunday.
Kuldeep Srivastava, IMD scientist and head of the regional weather forecasting center, earlier told IANS that Sunday could be the coldest night of the month. He said that the cold winds following the snowfall in the Himalayan states can bring mercury to 7 degrees.
Srivastava said, as the wind continues to move towards northwest, cold winds are coming from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, causing snowfall. Apart from this, due to clear sky in the day, the heat ends quickly and the nights are cold.
However, Srivastava also speculated that the temperature is likely to increase for the next three-four days. He said that due to western disturbance and change in wind direction, temperature will increase.
On Friday morning, the minimum temperature in the national capital dropped by five degrees below normal to 7.5 degrees Celsius. According to IMD officials, it was the lowest temperature recorded since November 2006.
According to IMD scientists, the minimum temperature in November usually does not go below 10 ° C. He attributed the combination of cold winds and clear skies to the drop in temperature in Delhi.
He said it was unusual for the minimum temperature to fall in single digits in mid-November. Winter starts early this year. The sharp drop in night temperature is mainly due to the cold winds coming from the snow-covered western Himalayan region.
The city’s minimum temperature was recorded at 9.4 degrees on Thursday. In 2017, the minimum temperature reached 7.6 degrees in the last week of November. The lowest temperature was recorded at 11.4 degrees last November and 10.5 degrees Celsius in 2018.
Meanwhile, the city’s air quality index fell to a poor category on Saturday with a reading of 252. The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research said 1,264 fire counts were seen in neighboring states.
