Digital Desk, New Delhi. The country’s oldest party is going through its worst phase these days. In two consecutive Lok Sabha elections, it was defeated drastically and the same is the case in the assembly elections. The Congress’s performance in the Bihar assembly elections and by-elections in other states was shameful. On the poor performance, senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said that the Congress is at the bottom of the last 72 years.
Ghulam Nabi Azad said, ‘We are all concerned about the defeat, especially about Bihar and the by-election results. I don’t blame the leadership for the defeat. Our people associated with the party have lost ground level contacts. People should love the party. In the last 72 years, Congress is at the bottom of the list. The Congress has not even held the post of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha during the last two terms, but the Congress won 9 seats in the Ladakh Hill Council elections, while we were not expecting such a positive result.
Azad said that elections are not won by five-star culture. The biggest problem with today’s leaders is that if they get a party ticket, they book the first five-star hotel. If there is a bumpy road, they will not go on it. He said that the time has come to leave the five-star culture. No election can be won until we leave it. Surrounding party officials, Azad said that without elections, anyone in the party gets any position. Right now the party officials are appointed but if all the officials are elected from the election, then they will understand their responsibility.
He said that unless we change our way of functioning at every level, things will not change. Azad said, ‘I am giving a clean chit to the Gandhi family because of the Corona epidemic because there is not much they can do right now. There has been no change in our demands. They have agreed to most of our demands. If they want to become a national alternative and revive the party, then our leadership should hold elections.
